Job applications: Quality over Quantity

Introduction


I recall an experience from my first year living in Canada when I attended a job fair in Toronto. During the event, I attended a presentation by a Human Resources Manager that left a lasting impression on me. She posed a series of questions to the audience, inquiring about the number of job applications people had submitted and the outcomes they had experienced. Her thought-provoking questions went something like this:


"Raise your hand if you've applied to 10 jobs and received no response."


"Raise your hand if you've applied to 50 jobs and still heard nothing."


"Raise your hand if you've applied to 100 jobs and encountered the same outcome."


To my surprise, many hands were raised in response to each question. The HR manager then made a profound statement: "You're not achieving the results you desire, yet you continue employing the same ineffective strategy. How can you expect different outcomes if you persist with a strategy that clearly isn't working?"


Her words struck a chord with me, making me realize the inherent flaw in the "quantity over quality" approach to job applications. Applying to an excessive number of positions without a thoughtful and targeted approach was a recipe for disappointment. It became clear that a change in strategy was necessary to increase the likelihood of success.
